Murmuring Minds is an interactive performance installation by Studio Drift that explores the intricate patterns governing movement and process through human-machine interaction.
Project Overview
The installation features sixty autonomously-moving rectangular blocks that function as a swarm, responding to audience participation during the performance. Drawing inspiration from swarming behaviors in birds, fish, and bees, the installation creates an environment balancing sociability, study, and play.
Collaboration with Studio Drift
JDT Engineering developed the embedded electronics and control systems that bring Studio Drift's artistic vision to life, enabling seamless autonomous operation of the sixty-block swarm system.
Core Concept
Murmuring Minds examines: - Decision-making processes and their visible effects on composition - Blurred boundaries between natural and artificial systems - Leadership and control within contemporary contexts - Human agency within larger technological structures
Different participant choices generate varying responses—some creating chaos while others trigger synchronized block movements, transcending passive observation.
JDT Engineering's Contribution
JDT Engineering provided comprehensive electronics development and system integration:
- Autonomous Robot Systems: Custom electronics for sixty independent mobile platforms
- Wireless Communication: Robust wireless control systems for coordinated swarm behavior
- Embedded Control: Real-time control firmware for responsive autonomous movement
- PCB Design: Custom circuit boards for reliable operation in performance environments
- System Integration: Coordination of motors, sensors, wireless communication, and power management
- Performance Optimization: Wireless and control system tuning for reliable multi-robot operation
Technical Challenges
The project required solving complex technical challenges including: - Coordinating sixty autonomous units in real-time - Ensuring reliable wireless communication in crowded environments - Developing robust control algorithms for swarm behavior - Creating power-efficient systems for extended performance durations
Recognition
The installation was presented at LUMA Arles in June 2024, with coverage by Designboom highlighting its immersive interactive components.
